Manaleak's Modern Regional Qualifier for Legacy European Championship, Athens (Round 3) 18.03.23 - Tournament Report and Decklists
Round 3 qualifiers seemed to come around fast, offering players another chance to take their first steps on the competitive ladder Season 1 draws to a close. Although less severe than those affecting our Round 2 Qualifiers, train strikes once again caused issues for a number of players hoping to attend. ome last minute registrations balanced out against a number train-related cancellations to bring a respectable 36 players along to our mid-March Modern Regional Championship Qualifier. The winner of this event was set to earn an an invitation to Legacy’s European Championship in Athens and a £200 bursary, with further prizes and promos in the pool, including Mystical Dispute promos for our first 16 preregistrations.
As the last season to feature open format scheduling, the room held a mix of local Modern aficionados and seasoned competitive players, some fresh back from LEC Naples the previous weekend. With a high standard of play in the room, our judge Hary Barlow was kept busy (you can read Hary’s event report here); overall play went smoothly throughout and overall there was a friendly and relatively relaxed atmosphere in the room for an event of this level.
Round 2 begins at Manaleak's Modern RCQ for LEC Athens; train strikes and a busy event schedule made for a slightly turnout on the day.
A tightly fought six rounds of Swiss saw in our top 8: Nick Brown (5/1/0), Thomas Mason (our season 2 Pioneer invitational winner) (4/0/2), Jacob Vicarage (4/0/2), Callum Laird (4/1/1), Paul Archer (4/1/1), Dylan Gregory-Martin (4/1/1), Lukas Lazarevas (4/1/1) and Pip Railing (4/2/0), who made it into the cut on OMW% (opponent match win percentage). Commiserations and well played to Daniel Yam, Keiran Randazzo, Ben Jones and Daniel Wales who also earned 12 points on the day but didn’t quite make it through to the knockout stages. On top of the featured prizing, all players who made it through to top 8 took home a Thing in the Ice // Awoken Horror promo card, with a foil version set aside for our event winner.
The quarterfinals saw Nick Brown win 2-0 against Pip Railing, Jacob Vicarage 2-1 against Dylan Gregory-Martin, Callum Laird 2-1 against Paul Archer and Thomas Mason 2-1 against Lukas Lazarevas. Pip, Dylan, Paul and Lukas each took away £25 store credit for making it through to top 8.
Semi-finals played out with clean sheets for both our finalists: Callum Laird taking a 2-0 victory against Tom Mason, and Jacob Vicarage claiming the win 2-0 against Nick Brown. Thomas and Nick each took home £50 store credit, whilst Callum and Jacob went through to the finals.
After a short discussion between players over the feasibility of a prize split, the players were encouraged to play it out for the top spot they had both come to claim. It was a short, but fierce battle, with Jacob burning his way through to a clean 2-0 victory. Callum took a consolation £100 store credit for his strong performance on the day, whilst Jacob walked away with a £200 cash bursary plus a prestigious invitation to the next stage on the competitive ladder: Legacy European Championship in Athens.
Congratulations to our Manaleak Modern RCQ Round 3 Winner, Jacob, and Finalist Callum
Massive thanks to all the players who came along and made this such a great day, and to all those who were with us in spirit but couldn’t make the journey. Thanks again to Hary, and our scorekeepers, Sam and Rhian, for ensuring fair play throughout and for keeping the day running smoothly.
