Eternal Weekend: Legacy Win a Box and Modern Qualifier (27th & 28th August 2022)

At the end of August, we hosted our first double-event weekend in over two years. With a very last minute invite from Legacy to host one of this season's store-based invitational qualifiers, we had a tight summer schedule of events to work around in order to avoid clashing with other nearby stores. With so many Pioneer events available to players and a strong Modern field amongst our local player base, we opted for Modern format for our qualifier, combined it with our preplanned Legacy win a box and turned August bank holiday into our first Eternal weekend event.  

Hosted amidst a season of rail strikes, excess heat and pre-announced competing qualifiers, we were pleased to have so many players turn up to not just our Saturday Legacy event but also to support our post-pandemic return to the competitive scene at Sunday's Modern format Regional Qualifier for Legacy European Tour.

Legacy win a box, Saturday 27.08.22

Twenty-five players joined us for our Legacy win a box on Saturday 27th August. With a range of decks in the room, including red control, 8-cast, delver, elves and lands, there was a slightly more control-based field in the room, fielded by a number of experienced players. Some games were over in a matter of minutes, but there were some longer to-and-fro matches, albeit with largely good vibes throughout the day and a lot of players enjoying the chance to crack out their Legacy decks.

25 players joined us at our Birmingham store to play in our Legacy win a box.

The prize pool incorporated a booster box per 8 players, plus promo packs for participation on the day. After five rounds of Swiss, Keiran Randazzo, Rhian, Matt Brown, Sam Neal, Lukas Lazarevus, Ryan Carter, Yat Ka Leung and Adam Vigh made the cut to top 8. Matt, Keiran, Rhian and Sam played through to the semifinal, where Rhian won 2-1 against Matt and Keiran went 2-0 against Sam. Our finalists chose to split the top two prizes for store credit.

Sunday Modern Regional Qualifier for Legacy European Tour

After the late notice from Legacy and our subsequent last minute planning and announcements, we were pleased to see a good turnout for Sunday's Modern Qualifier. 43 players came on the day, with strong representation from local players, and many from further afield - some players travelling from as far away as Glasgow. Rail issues left us without judge Harry Barlow, however David Inglis kindly stepped in to support with judge calls and deck checks, supported by our TOs, experienced players Rhian and Sam (who you might have spotted in our Legacy Top 4!).

Round 5 at Manaleak's Birmingham WPN Qualifier for Legacy European Tour - Chris and Dylan on table 1, with play resuming shortly after deck checks.

With bigger prizes at stake, the vibe in the room was more focused than Saturday's win a box; despite a number of rounds going to time the day ran promptly and smoothly for the full six rounds of Swiss before going to top eight knockout. The field stayed tight all the way through, with only a handful of players dropping early in the event; round six still saw a significant number of players fighting for their place in the finals.

Graham Dent, Matt Brown, Chris Mander, Ryan Carter, Dylan Gregory-Martin, Keiran Randazzo, Andrew McCollin and Patrick Seed made it through to top 8. Quarterfinals saw Ryan Carter beat Matt Brown 2-1, Andrew McCollin went 2-0 against Dylan Gregory-Martin, Chris Mander 2-0 against Graham Dent and Patrick Seed 2-0 against Keiran Randazzo. Chris won 2-1 against Ryan in the semifinals, and Andrew 2-1 against Patrick. Our finalists then agreed to a prize split, with Chris Mander taking the Legacy European Tour invitational spot in Sophia, and Andrew McCollin walking away with two Double Masters 2022 boxes and 1st & 2nd place Nythkos, Shrine to Nyx promos. Chris will have the chance to earn a spot on the World Tour this autumn - we wish him the best of luck in the next stages of the competition!
