Manaleak.com Birmingham Modern SCG IQ Top 8 Decklists (April 2017) & Newsletter

We’re back! With our second SCG IQ in the books for the year and with 116 players turning up in the end, it’s the biggest event that we’ve ever held. Any bigger and we may have to start finding somewhere else to hold them!

The format once again was Modern, which is still proving to be the most popular constructed format among the competitive players in the country! Recently, all the talk surrounding Modern has been about 2 things: Reprints in Modern Masters 2017 and Death’s Shadow! The reprinting of huge, key cards for the format, including Tarmogoyf, Liliana of the Veil, Snapcaster Mage, Goblin Guide, Zendikar Fetchlands, Inquisition of Kozilek and tons more has actually slashed the price of a deck in Modern significantly, making it much more accessible for more players!

The Death’s Shadow decks that were popular during the summer of last year have resurfaced in the last couple of months as a hot contender for the top deck of the format in the wake of the last additions to the Modern banlist that took out Infect and Dredge as the most popular choices. Last year’s versions had access to Gitaxian Probe, which allowed them to be far more aggressive and more combo-oriented, playing cards like Become Immense and Temur Battle Rage. This time around, the deck is much slower but more resilient as a result. There have been tons of different versions popping up in all sorts of different colour combinations, including blue versions that play Stubborn Denial and white versions that play Lingering Souls and Orzhov Charm but by far the most popular version is the one that Josh Utter-Leyton used to win GP Vancouver less than 2 months ago, a Jund version that uses red and green to play Tarmogoyf, Traverse the Ulvenwald and Kolaghan’s Command among many others. 2 copies of the deck made it into our Top 8, piloted by David Calf and Silver Level Pro and GP Champion Kayure Patel, both members of Team Axion. They both opted for a very similar list to Utter-Leyton’s, with a few small improvements.

Alas, Death’s Shadow was prominent but didn’t make it past the Top 8. Our winner, multiple Pro Tour competitor Sam Rolph, opted for a streamlined version of Modern Burn, designed to beat the Death’s Shadow decks. When Death’s Shadow itself relies on having a low life total to be strong, all you have to do is wait for them to deal themselves a bunch of damage and then finish the job with a flurry of powerful red spells. His version relegated the usual green splash to the sideboard, making the manabase far more consistent in the main deck. Rounding out our Top 8 we had 2 Merfolk decks, 1 Ad Nauseam deck (piloted by local player Johannes Mohr no less, who also made the Top 8 of our first IQ), 1 Storm deck (using the newly released Baral, Chief of Compliance) and 1 very surprising deck which we haven’t really seen in Modern for quite some time: Tezzerator! An artifact-based control deck that wins using the Thopter Foundry + Sword of the Meek combo. The name naturally comes from the inclusion of Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas. It seems that the big cards that have made this deck possible however are two new cards from Aether Revolt: Fatal Push and Whir of Invention. Whir of Invention in particular looks great here as it allows the deck to find its combo pieces more efficiently as well as letting the deck play a wide variety of answers to different problems and find them with ease.

This was a great day all round! I am very happy to have seen so many players turn out to play Modern. If anyone who was at the event has any feedback on how we might be able to improve future events, please don’t hesitate to contact me by sending me an e-mail at: info@manaleak.com (FAO: Andrew Quinn).
