First Monday night X-Wing at Manaleak.com Birmingham it’s been a great turn out with 10 players turning up with a crazy variety of lists from all three factions. As I had to head off for my 9pm train so I did not get to answer a question from Neil properly. Which was about how he could strengthen his list. I thought it might be worth talking about Whisper.
Neil is running Whisper with Veteran Instincts, Fire control systems, operations specialist and advance cloaking device. A couple of these upgrades you really can’t ignore as advance cloaking device allows you to cloak after an attack you are going to want your pilot skill as high as possible Veteran Instincts becomes the second essential upgrade.
This leaves you with just two upgrade slots a crew slot and a system slot. To make a choice on what is best to take it’s going to depend on what role you want whisper to fill. With only 2 Hull and 2 shields you need a role for whisper that won’t sit her at range one of your opponent or facing down multiple arcs. With her decloak she is also one of the fastest ships in the game and also one of the least predictable. However get her tangled up in the obstacles which will either limit or remove her ability to decloak and you’ll leave her broken on the rocks. This really leaves us with her as a long range sniper or a flanker the latter being a role she truly excels at.
Knowing this starts to narrow down the choices we are going to make. With the system slot you have a  choice defence or offence both leave you good choices. Offensively fire control system is going to provide you with regular target locks as long as you keep the locked ship in arc. In defence sensor Jammer will keep her alive in some tricky situations but ideally you are going to want your opponents with out focus tokens to really make that pay off.
Crew member choice is much more difficult. I’ll split this into offensive choices and defensive ones.
Offensive choices are many, in case you had not noticed x wing is more aggressively balanced than defensively. If you have picked fire control you could consider maximising this with weapons engineer allowing you to target lock 2 different ships this makes sense if you think you are going to struggle to keep ships in arc, allowing you to switch targets. Another useful option could be Kylo Ren his ability to push critical damage through shields can be very useful plus rolling 4 dice with a target lock gives you a good chance of rolling a crit result. Even if whisper does not trigger his ability you will have other ships that can. At five points Gunner could be a good option however this might not trigger often and could become a waste of five points.
There are a couple of crew upgrades that bridge the gap. Agent Kallus is great as a mini focus on green and red dice. Unfortunately this is only against one ship which you’ll pick at the start of the game. Next comes rebel captive and tactician both of these cards apply stress, making your opponent not only more predictable but possibly shutting down their actions.  Of the two cards rebel captive is more reliable and will make your opponent think twice before picking whisper as the target.
Finally some defensive cards.
Let’s start with navigator this card allows you to change your manoeuvre  after you reveal your dial. This might not seem all that useful at first however you will be moving last or close to last. This could give you the extra re-positioning needed to not take a shot at all. The last card to look at is hot shot co-pilot, this card will force your opponent to spend their focus token in defence. Meaning when they shoot back they probably won’t have one to modify dice. If you pair this with sensor Jammer whisper is going to be much harder to kill however you are going to need to get 8 points of use out of it.
With a bit of luck this will help to select  alternative upgrades for whisper and consider how to use her. She will be a priority target as she has four red dice but with some careful flying you can keep her alive long enough to do some serious damage.

This article focuses on a question I was asked on Monday night about strengthening lists. I've taken the idea of picking one ship (Whisper) and looking at alternative ways of building her
