Manaleak.com Birmingham PPTQ Kyoto Top 8 Standard Decklists & Videos (Plus A Couple Of Bonus Lists!)

An unprecedented 68 players made their way to Birmingham this past weekend for our first PPTQ in 2017. Standard was the format, one that seems to have been near enough solved by this point in time. The format seems to be focused on 3 decks: Mardu (W/B/R) Vehicles, B/G [c]Winding Constrictor[/c] variants (such as delirium or energy-focused versions) and the [c]Saheeli Rai[/c] combo with [c]Felidar Guardian[/c]. Staying true to form, our Top 8 was made up of 87.5% these decks, with the final slot going to U/R Emerge in the hands of Usama Sajjad, a deck rising to form on the back of an incredible matchup vs. the B/G decks in this equation.

Our overall winner was Team Axion member David Calf, with the Pro Tour-winning Mardu Vehicles. The deck is capable of incredibly fast starts backed up by [c]Gideon, Ally of Zendikar[/c] to give the deck some powerful late game options. This newer version of the deck packs a powerful option out of the sideboard too, bringing in a package of [c]Fumigate[/c]s and late game bombs to give it more of an edge in the slower matchups that the deck typically struggles with.

Looking towards the B/G corner of the triangle, 3 variations made our Top 8. Although all 3 were playing the full 4 copies of both [c]Winding Constrictor[/c] and its best friend [c]Walking Ballista[/c], all 3 were approaching their list in a different manner, featuring different cards such as [c]Bristling Hydra[/c], [c]Grim Flayer[/c] and [c]Noxious Gearhulk[/c]. All 3 decks are midrange decks utilising powerful threats and removal spells to attack other decks in the format.

The final deck is “4 colour Saheeli”. The infinite combo of [c]Saheeli Rai[/c] and [c]Felidar Guardian[/c] is fairly well known by now, but which shell does it fit into best? You already need to play white, blue and red in order to play both pieces, so Jeskai might seem like a natural fit, but recently a 4 colour version has been gaining in popularity. This version uses green as a base and plays [c]Aetherworks Marvel[/c] as an advantage engine to dig for each of the combo pieces. In addition, [c]Felidar Guardian[/c] becomes a lot more powerful in this shell, as it is able to flicker even more cards, such as [c]Rogue Refiner[/c] and [c]Whirler Virtuoso[/c].

Finally, rounding out our top 8 is U/R Emerge. Throughout the history of this game, mechanics that end up giving you under-costed spells have been frightfully powerful. Mechanics such as Affinity and Phyrexian mana have resulted in some of the most powerful decks and spells of all time, and cards like [c]Blazing Shoal[/c] and [c]Bloodbraid Elf[/c] are even on the Modern ban list, because they give you something for free that you should otherwise be paying for. Magic’s latest version of this kind of mechanic is Emerge, allowing you access to powerful 7-8 mana creatures for a massive discount on mana. U/R Emerge combines [c]Elder Deep-Fiend[/c] with a package of zombie creatures. Reanimating an [c]Advanced Stitchwing[/c] that you discarded to a [c]Cathartic Reunion[/c] will allow you to flood the board with your Prized Amalgams. You can then sacrifice one of these creatures to emerge your Deep-Fiend and apply a ton of pressure for very little effort.

Bonus Decklists!

People are saying that Standard is a Rock-Paper-Scissors format, so I’ve decided to play Spock!

And now a couple of bonus lists for you! First of all, a Grixis deck. This one has been requested by a number of players online, so we decided to share it with you. The player was Alex Roebuck, an old friend of mine from the judge program. When I approached Alex during the day he had this to say: “People are saying that Standard is a Rock-Paper-Scissors format, so I’ve decided to play Spock!” His Grixis control deck took him to an undefeated record of 4-0-1 by round 5, having accepted a draw with his friend Usama, but 2 rounds later he wasn’t quite able to pick up the win that he needed to secure himself a top 8. But, he still clinched 15th place, winning himself £25 of store credit and a free entry to the next PPTQ in May. Here was his list:

15th Place – Alex Roebuck, Grixis Control

3 Unlicensed Disintegration
4 Void Shatter

4 Evolving Wilds
5 Island
1 Mountain
3 Smoldering Marsh

2 Dragonmaster Outcast
2 Glint-Sleeve Siphoner
1 Negate
1 Painful Truths
2 Radiant Flames
1 Release the Gremlins
1 Shock
2 Transgress the Mind[/d]

A number of players on the day were asking to see this list from local player Janna Goldstein. The list is blue and colourless at its core for the, by this point, typical suite of Eldrazi creatures that we all know and love/despise. Red and Green splashes give access to a package of energy cards, allowing the deck to run [c]Harnessed Lightning[/c], one of the most versatile removal spells in the format. [c]Rogue Refiner[/c] in the main deck is a fantastic 3-drop which lets you curve into a turn 4 emerge creature without losing value.

17th Place – Janna Goldstein, Temur Eldrazi

[d]Creatures:
1 Drowner of Hope
4 Elder Deep-Fiend
4 Eldrazi Skyspawner
4 Matter Reshaper
4 Metallic Mimic
2 Reality Smasher
3 Rogue Refiner
4 Thought-Knot Seer
2 Wretched Gryff

Spells:
4 Harnessed Lightning
4 Shock

Lands:
4 Aether Hub
2 Botanical Sanctum
3 Evolving Wilds
1 Forest
1 Island
1 Lumbering Falls
1 Mountain
4 Sanctum of Ugin
3 Spirebluff Canal
3 Wandering Fumarole
1 Wastes

Sideboard:
1 Appetite for the Unnatural
3 Baral’s Expertise
2 Dispel
2 Incendiary Flow
2 Natural State
3 Negate
1 Release the Gremlins
1 Skysovereign, Consul Flagship[/d]
