Manaleak.com 2016 Eternal Weekend Decklists & Summary (Modern, Legacy, Vintage & Oldschool)

Thank you so much!

WOWSERS, what a fantastic weekend! We’d like to firstly thank each and every single one of you for turning up at the Manaleak.com 2016 Eternal Weekend, and for making it such a memorable experience. We’d also like to say a special thank you to our judging team and members of the community who did a fantastic job especially with helping relocate the whole tournament to another floor within the space of an hour or so. We’ve talked to the building management and the other business involved about this to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.

And without further ado, lets take a quick look at each championship!

2016 Eternal Weekend Legacy Championship

2016 Eternal Weekend Legacy Championship
2016 Eternal Weekend Legacy Championship

On the first morning of our Eternal Weekend, 76 players turned out to play in our second Legacy championships. With £500 cash and a trophy on the line, everyone was eager to claim the top spot. Legacy is the most diverse format in the game and with 8 distinct archetypes (once we discount Mark Aylett’s take on ‘Elves’) in the Top 8, that statement seems to be supported. The day was clearly a victory for veterans of the format too, with 3 of our Top 8 competitors having to miss out on the Oldschool championships that evening, to instead play out the Top 8 of this event. If you’ve ever wanted to get into Legacy, these decklists are a fine example of the range of decks available to you, along with at least 20-30 more possible archetypes out there for you to try at home!

2016 Eternal Weekend Modern Championship

2016 Eternal Weekend Modern Championship mtg
2016 Eternal Weekend Modern Championship

An incredible 78 players turned out to crown our Modern Championship on Sunday. Modern’s incredible diversity ALSO failed to disappoint with 8 totally different deck types gracing the Top 8! Although Infect managed to take the top spot in Legacy, the supposed best deck in the format didn’t reach the top cut this time around. Murmurs echoed around the room of [c]Ad Nauseam[/c] decks taking down a lot of key players and local player Keiran Randazzo took a spot in Top 4 with the deck. Another local, James Allen, took a spot in the final with an interesting take on Bogles, splashing red for Modern all-star [c]Temur Battle Rage[/c], before being stopped in his run by none other than Rob Catton, piloting the British favourite: Blue/White Control.

2016 Eternal Weekend Vintage Championship

2016 Eternal Weekend Vintage Championship
2016 Eternal Weekend Vintage Championship

Whilst probably the least accessible format the game has to offer, Vintage is always a sight to behold and our Top 8 has stacked with British Vintage experts playing a wonderful variety of decks. For me, the major story has to be the influence of Kaladesh on the format. With so many cards, including the Power 9, available to Vintage players, it’s remarkable for even 1 card for a Standard set to show up in Vintage decklists, but no fewer than FOUR cards from the popular set made their way into our Top 8. [c]Fleetwheel Cruiser[/c], [c]Inventors’ Fair[/c], [c]Paradoxical Outcome[/c] and even [c]Torrential Gearhulk[/c] all made appearances, with Paradoxical Outcome effectively creating its own new archetype of deck. Vintage is a terrific format, one with a sweet amount of things on show and we can’t wait to see it again next time round!

2016 Eternal Weekend Oldschool Championship

2016 Eternal Weekend Oldschool Championship
2016 Eternal Weekend Oldschool Championship

The Oldschool Championship has got to be one of the most enjoyable Magic events to run. The Oldschool players set a perfect example for how Magic: the Gathering should be played, and it was a real pleasure just watching the warm friendship on display. Here is a copy of Alastair Kennedy’s Oldschool report.

***

Firstly, I’d just like to say thank you to all who were able to make it, and to Manaleak.com. A great weekend, hopefully we see Eternal UK Weekend Three in 2017.

Alastair Kennedy Eternal Weekend Oldschool Decklist: Version 3.0

Alastair Kennedy Eternal Weekend Oldschool Decklist
Alastair Kennedy Eternal Weekend Oldschool Decklist

A significant improvement over the London MKM red splash v2.2, Mountains really are sh*t. I dropped the Tax/Loot in an effort to speed the deck up a little, on reflection I’m unsure if it was faster, but don’t think Tax is necessary (I’m seeing less LD, but happy with 1-2 Tax in the SB).

LoA remains king, Moat the backbone, Forcefield a useful crutch, and Universe + CoP Red over-performed as people realised that throwing bolts was correct. Transmute is very strong, with Book doing what Book does, and Orb on demand.

I’m not sure splashes for Black, Green, and Red offer great improvement. Red I just don’t get; Black is of course strong with DT and Twist; although it is Green I’d favour with Library and Regrowth. What I can’t reconcile is the mana hungry and colour demands of WW and UU; City starts to hurt real quick, not to mention Blood Moon, Sinkhole, Bottle, and Rain being relevant.

Rnd 1 – Rich: Mono Black

T1 Hippy in G1 and G2 is not what I want to see. StP G1 and Preacher G2 bought me time, and I’m happy to ignore Knights despite their depicted horsemanship breaching a Moat. It’s just time after that. First time playing Rich, super clear game-state and communications; a pleasure.

2-0 (1-0)

Rnd 2 – Steven: RUG

I can’t recall this one too well, I’ve written Ape/Serendib/Gargoyle; and under G1 Moat, and G2 Serra x2 which was a race getting there at 4 life.

2-0 (2-0)

Rnd 3 – Jon: WW

Wow this deck is aggressive, stemmed the bleed at 3 life G1, with a wasp victory over 19 more turns and 3-cards in library (Jon should have made me do the last 3 damage with my 3 draw-steps remaining). So, with 10 minutes left, not enough 2/1 were drawn. We took a look at the list, and suspect I’ll see RW next time we play.

1-0 (3-0)

Rnd 4 – Jason: GWR Aggro/Zoo

This was unpleasant (not Jason, his damn deck), tight play, no mistakes and aggressive. I never felt that this was in any way certain; my first loss of a game. G3 was somewhat unfair: T1 Sapphire, Island, Walk into T2 Recall, Island, Lotus, Moat. Truly a better opening than any I had in Vintage, sorry Jason, you don’t expect this in Oldschool.

2-1 (4-0)

Rnd 5 – Karl: BRU

Karl has perhaps the absolute worst top-deck skill’s I’ve ever encountered; or the bearer of an innate ability to shuffle lands and spells into two separate piles. Universe did some work G2, but Karl was more unlucky than I was good.

2-0 (5-0)

Quarters – Jim: UR Counter-Burn

G1 in true Jim style, I’m Stripmine’d and beaten down with a T2 Lotus-Serendib followed with two Factory. G2 I control and push through with Serra (I think). G3, close, very close with Jim’s LoA doing some work, he’s facing lethal but one mana short of a fireball for 11; with a Counter for my Disenchant on his Lotus, he doesn’t top-deck land, LoA draws the land but lost 1 mana with the LoA, Serra gets there.

2-1 (6-0)

Semi – Karl (Rnd 5):BRU

G1 Karl rips all land or no land, after seven games over three events. of doing one or the other, I can’t remember which way around this one was; 1-0 to variance. G2 Karl’s got a very strong hand, land + 3 rocks for a T2 twister. My forced mull was just the better 7, although Universe was essential. Karma will hit and I fully expect Karl to crush me next time.

2-0 (7-0)

Final – Tommy: UR Counter-Burn

He’s never played the format, his deck is good, and he doesn’t make mistakes when he puts his mind to it. So good in fact that he makes T1 LoA which sets the tone, and whilst I start to stabilise I’m on the back foot and it’s a never ending steam of bolt – psionic – bolt. G2, I open with some rocks, whilst Tommy again outplays me with a T1 LoA !! My rocks get me a T2 Orb and my strike rate stays positive. The deck does what it does, counter what I need, get the scoop at the right time. G3, T1 I outplay Tommy with my own LoA. This deck is almost unbeatable with LoA active, which I think got mine’d at some point, but far too late to matter.

2-1 (8-0), 15-3 overall

That’s it, 3am finish and far too much drunk (comparative, excluding Chris). Looking forward to the next event, and the opportunity to win perhaps the greatest prize in Magic, Jim’s jacket.

Development continues… LoA remains too good for this narrow card pool.

Vintage

Fantastic again, great turn-out and very happy to make a second Top 8. My build of Oath-Still was wrong, but I like the concept and will be stealing some of Patrick’s ideas (thank you in advance). Sorry to Andrew on the clock, but on the proactive/aggro side I’d have scooped a lot earlier G1. Too many close games… David and Mark especially. If you’re reading this Jim… those are the last 3 card’s I’m ever giving you for free! Punished badly, and thank you.

See you at the next one!

That just about wraps up our 2016 Eternal Weekend. I sincerely hope everyone had a great time! Look out for our next event which should be around June next year! We will be waiting for you!
