StarCityGames Have Changed Their Magic: The Gathering Invitational Qualifier (IQ) Structure, And Now It’s So Much Better!

So, I’m sure most of us are aware by now that StarCityGames are a big deal in the Magic community. Well on January 7th you will have a chance to qualify for the SCG Tour yourself and we’ll even help you fly out to it! SCG recently announced some important changes to their tour and also to the support available for their qualifiers, so here is a quick guide to those changes and what it means for us:

Event Frequency

SCG IQs were very common to see in America until this year. SCG have announced a few small changes to the sanctioning procedure. Each store can only run 1 invitational qualifier per month and SCG are trying to make them more spread out for players. Essentially, they’re trying to make the IQ a more special thing. Whilst this doesn’t affect us, here in the UK, I will take this opportunity to point out that we would be happy to run more IQs in the future, assuming of course that this one is successful. If you would like to see more of these, please give us some feedback and tell us what you want to see.

Prizes

OK, the sweet part. First of all, the top 2 players will each earn themselves a spot at the next Invitational at the end of June, where you can play for a share of a $100,000 prize pool! This is an increase from the previous 1 slot at each regular IQ.

In addition to the qualifications, the winner will win a cash prize of £400, which should go a long away towards helping you to attend the Invitational itself! We will also be offering a cash prize to second place, based on attendance, as well as generous booster prizes to the rest of the top 8 and possibly further down the standings.

SCG Swag!

StarCityGames Have Changed Their Invitational Qualifier (IQ) StructureNaturally, this being an event sponsored by SCG, there is a considerable amount of cool stuff that you can get for finishing highly or even just for attending.

All players who finish in the top 8, on top of their respective individual prizes, will win a special Top 8 pin badge as well as a Top 8 playmat. This has now been changed to include even more swag! So, furthermore, anyone finishing in 9th-16th place will win an IQ playmat featuring a retired design– that’s 16 playmats in all to be won!

Finally, the first 50 players to register will receive an SCG token featuring the artwork of a recent Invitational winner AND another token exclusive to IQs.

Entry Fee

Currently, you can preregister for this event for just £24.99. The price on the door will be £29.99, so if you’re planning on coming, then you’d might as well save yourself £5 on your entry.

Format

Well, how about Modern? I’m told it’s a very popular format with a large following of players. Well, our SCG IQ is going to be Modern. We will be playing the fairly standard X rounds of Swiss, based on attendance and a cut to Top 8.

Needless to say, this should be a great day all round with plenty on offer! Come and kick off the new year with us at Manaleak.com in style!
