Ten Minute Magic (May 20, 2016) – MTG Set Announcements, Kaladesh, Commander 2016
Join Joseph Dunlap and Ben Cottee in this week’s episode of Ten Minute Magic, a weekly podcast format that highlights recent news in the world of Magic: The Gathering and looks at exceptional comments from recent Magic content on the internet.
This is what’s going on in Magic: The Gathering this week…
1. Announcement Day Was Announced Along With Lots of Announcements
Wizards will now set out a six month block of Magic releases at two points in the year, in September and in April. This past Monday was the first ever Announcement Day and covers all releases of Magic products from September 2016 to April 2017, the next announcement in April 2017 will cover to September 2017, etc. This gives Magic players better opportunity to plan their hobby but also takes some of the fun out of announcements throughout the year – kind of like getting all your presents in one go.
So what was announced?
2. New Block – Kaladesh
Kaladesh is Chandra’s home world so it would follow that the crippled redhead last seen on Zendikar will be front and centre in the block. However, we did get our first look at a new planeswalker, [card]Saheeli Rai[/card], and art direction that is much more South Asian flavoured.
What we know about Kaladesh comes mostly from Magic Origins where it was shown in the U/R Thopters theme. It appears to be an inventor’s world verging on steampunk. This could have waves in older formats where Affinity and Metalcraft exist and has had the very amusing side-effect of the internet buying out [card]Steamflogger Boss[/card], making it a $1 to $15 overnight sensation.
What’s a [card]Steamflogger Boss[/card] I hear you cry? An excellent question. It is a card from Future Sight that has the Contraption keyword. No one knows what contraptions are, or do, since this is the only card that mentions it and Maro has said time and time again that contraptions are a difficult design issue to overcome. “So just because we have inventors we get contraptions?” No, listener, there is more.
On Maro’s Blogatog, he answered a question that wondered if Kaladesh was the set where a long standing design issue was solved (as Maro had mentioned this in his weekly article). Maro confirmed it was. so there you go, Contraptions confirmed…

3. Planeswalker Packs and Bundles
The next two announcements also tie into the new set. First, intro packs will be replaced by a Planeswalker pack. These packs are designed to bridge the gap between learning the game and constructing your first deck from the deck builders toolkit or boosters.
This starter 60 card deck with two boosters will include a unique Planeswalker card of a Planeswalker in the set as well as Rares to tutor for the walker and uncommons that work better with the planeswalker in play. These walkers will be designed for casual appeal and play style rather than Standard power level as they don’t want competitive players to have to buy 4 of these each! As many have stated with precon products’ track record (cough [card]True Name Nemesis[/card] Cough), how long until one of these powered down walkers hits Standard is more “when” than “if”.
Fat Packs have been rebranded to Bundles named along with the set. They have 10 boosters now, and slightly higher MSRP, but are otherwise identical.

4. Planechase Anthologies
Planechase is a product of preconstructed decks and oversized “planes” cards that have an effect on the overall game much like the old Global Enchantments. They were released twice and also contained some unique cards to those products that have seen eternal play such as [card]Baleful Strix[/card] and [card]Shardless Agent[/card].
Most commonly seen now in Commander games to spice things up, many players have tried to collect these with some now commandingly increasing prices. This new release in November 2016 packages both Planechase printings in the Anthology treatment that Duel Decks received recently. So you get all the products in one big box.

5. Duel Decks and Commander 2016
The first planeswalker on planeswalker action in a Duel Deck for a little while (these historically sell better than the “stuff vs. stuff” sets), Duel Deck: Nissa vs. Ob Nixilis was annouced for September 2016. While we haven’t been told which versions of the walkers are included, it could be [card]Nissa, Voice of Zendikar[/card] and [card]Ob Nixilis Reignited[/card] as they are the cards from when the two tussled.
So much already, but one more and it’s a biggy – 4 colour commander decks are coming in Commander 2016. Nephelim have flown off shelves in anticipation. Otherwise we don’t know much about these, but they create the last colour combination for legendary commanders – unless they decide to print 5-colour commanders in 2017.
