In a little over two weeks time the doors will open for the MSI World Championships, a five day event being held at the London ExCel Centre which includes tournaments for Chess, Scrabble, Go and, most importantly, Magic!
Tickets Available here – www.mindsportsevents.com
Date: 19th November 2014
Royal Victoria Dock
The Main Event
The headline event is a £10,000 cash prize pool standard (the largest prize pool ever for an independent event in the UK) and is an Epic Quest, the culmination of the Dark Challenge tournament circuit that started earlier this year and has already awarded over £16,000 and 1,250 Euros in prizes.
While a number of players have already secured free entry and/or byes from the various Dark Challenge Quests that have been held in the UK, Italy Portugal and Romania byes and free entries can still be won at the daily standard event on Wednesday and Thursday as well as the traditional Last Chance Qualifiers (or ‘grinder’ events as they’re also known) on the Friday which will take the form of 16 player flights and run throughout the day with the final flight at 2:15
Day 1 will be 8 rounds of swiss and those players with 18 points or better will advance to Day 2 where a further four rounds of swiss will be played.
At the end of that twelfth round players who finished 17th to 32nd will receive £100, 9th to 16th place will receive £200 and the top 8 players will progress to a single elimination play off for the remaining prize pot of nearly £7,000.
The Epic Quest is a premium event and will carry a 3x Planeswalker point multiplier. It will also use the MEEP electronic pairing system developed by Dark Sphere and trialled at a number of Quests as well as their PTQ and WMCQ in August. For those registered on the MEEP system it will send players their round pairings straight to their email account so there’s no need to cram around the paper pairings.
For those who unfortunately didn’t make day 2 of the Epic Quest there are the ‘MSI Grand Prix Seville 2015 VIP Vacation’ events with Modern starting at 9am, Standard at 10 and sealed at 11.
The Winner of each event will receive a prize valued at £400 including entrance to Grand Prix Seville and travel/ accommodation monies. The Standard event is also a GPT for Seville so the winner will also get two byes to the event.
The organisers have tried to provide something for everyone and Sealed, daily Booster Drafts, Team Sealed, Legacy and Vintage are all available during the World Championships.
The Prize Wall
A concept that’s big in the states and was very popular at GP Portland, most side events will offer ‘tickets’ instead of boosters. Players will then be able to exchange those tickets for a wide range of items from the Prize Wall including sealed product like Fat Packs and holiday gift boxes, current boosters and booster boxes, old boosters and booster boxes, singles, sleeves, deck boxes or even Wizard exclusive items. New Prizes are being added to the wall each day and a list of those announced so far can be found at http://www.darkchallenge.com/prizewall
Educating the Muggles
There will be massive support for new players at the World Championships with a dedicated area and staff specifically for those new to the game. Perspective Planeswalkers will be able to get a five minute taster demo or be part of hourly tutorial sessions introducing them to the game in much greater depths. Players will be given a free mono colour sample deck and can even take part in casual play or their first casual tournament with staff on hand to help them if they get stuck on any rules so if you know anyone that is curious to know what Magic is about this is a perfect opportunity for them to learn what the game is about.
The new player area will be running Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 5pm.
Manaleak’s own Fabrizio Anteri will be attending the Epic Quest and since he has three byes (it’s no surprise that he won multiple Dark Challenge Quests) he will be filling his time before the main event by teaching MSI’s Ambassador Rachel Riley how to play Magic!
Tell Your Story
This year’s MSI World Championships will be filmed for a one hour show which will be televised in the UK on two channels – Information TV (Sky 212) and Showcase (Sky 192).
The programme will showcase the exciting and competitive world of mindsports with clips of gameplay and interviews with players. Coverage will include chess, Magic: The Gathering and Scrabble.
The main drive behind the programme is to show the human interest stories and so MSI are currently looking to secure a few key players of various skill levels to feature as main characters in this programme.
Players who are interested in taking part should email email@example.com
Karl Kopinski (official WOTC artist) will be in attendance Saturday and Sunday. He will be available to sign cards as well as selling prints, artwork and working on illustrations. A full list of Magic Cards drawn by Karl (including Aether Vial, Butcher of the Horde, Chord of Calling, Master of Waves and Polukranos">Polukranos, World Eater to name just a few) can be found on Manaleak.com.
Dan Barrett, Magic’s Community Manager for Europe will be at the event on Friday and Saturday for Spellslinging so if you want to ask any questions or to give feedback directly to Wizards of the Coast this is your chance. You can also challenge Dan to a game of Standard or Modern and earn yourself a participation booster
