So you want to play Modern huh? And why not, it’s like the greatest hits of standard and we all love standard right?
Modern is a brewer’s paradise which gives you access to over 8200 cards and the possibilities are nearly endless. The only problem is, the entry price can be a bit steep – fetch lands, Tarmogoyf, Remand and Cryptic Command to name a few of the pieces necessary to compete with the big boys and girls.
Wizards wanted to address this issue and so they decided to build pre constructed event decks that were modern legal and playable – we’ve had standard event decks for some time since Scars of Mirrodin block and have been entirely reasonable for fnm level play.
Specific instances of this are the Rakdos: Wrack and Rage event deck which was capable of 4-0ing an FNM even in the hands of an inexperienced pilot due to the power level of the deck – as attested by one of my good friends who managed the feat within a month of playing – though the deck was very well position to fight against a zombie infested metagame.
Another interesting example was due to the overall power level of Stoneforge Mystic which upon the B&R announcement was banned in Standard with the only caveat being that you could indeed play it if you were playing the exact 75 cards from the War of Attrition event deck.
So where does this leave us now? Well we have an event deck, a Modern event deck which has been designed to allow newer players access to the format without becoming too invested – my UR delver list has a trade value of about $1200 which means I pretty much go to any modern event that I can get to.
The Modern Event Deck unlike the Standard versions has been poorly received which has given the Manaleak writing team an idea for a task! To see if we could build an entry level deck for the same price as the event deck £65 so we’re coming together as a collective to brew our little hearts out.
The list doesn’t need to be one to win a Pro Tour but it should be one that’d give you a chance in a FNM or a Game Day level event.
But it doesn’t end there! We want you! To send in your own submissions and the winner will receive the entire deck they created including sleeves and deckbox so it’s tournament ready.
The only rules are,
- The deck must be entirely Modern legal
- Must be valued at £65 or less using the Manaleak pricing.
- Completed lists to be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org
- Have fun!
For the competition basic lands will be counted as free and it would be really helpful if you could send your decklist with an attached screenshot of your Manaleak cart showing the total prices for all the pieces of your list. I’m going to include a list of my own to get your creative juices flowing and I’ll be going with an established burn archetype that I believe can have some fun with.
4 Goblin Arsonist
4 Keldon Marauders
4 Hellspark Elemental
4 Cunning Sparkmage
4 Ash Zealot
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt
2 Relic of Progenitus
2 Satyr Firedancer
3 Flame Slash
I feel like this deck could actually do some work, it’s pretty much geared to defeat combo as both Eidolon of the Great Revel and Ash Zealot are maindeck answers to players who want to try and sculpt their hand before going off with storm casting spells from the graveyard to kill you.
Searing Blaze was omitted from the list as there are no actual fetch lands to realistically turn it on in your opponents turn and I feel we have enough answers to creatures for Searing Blood to be included in the 75, though feel free to do so.
Some ideas to include if you want to go forwards with this would be Goblin Guide and Blood Moon which is integral in defeating any of the 3 colour decks and getting and the perfect manabase of UB Faeries.
Fetches would also be ideal as they give more fuel to the fire and allow you to splash white for the ability to boros charm and lightning helix which can really put you ahead in the dome race whilst increasing the overall power of your sideboarding options.
My deck comes in at £64.47 and could certainly be upgraded to being a real threat fora total less than £100.
Thank you for reading and best of luck in the competition!
