Command-OohArr – Commander Farming Themed Deck by Christopher Cooper

Playing Commander in a group can often degenerate into an arms race. Not just in game, though playing through that is largely the fun of it. I’m talking about the decks themselves. One person starts running Curiosity in their Niv-Mizzet deck, another slots in a Tooth and Nail combo and before you know it every game results in a mad rush to combo off before anyone else can.

Sometimes I just like to durdle.

Sometimes I want to play commander just to do silly things.

The deck below is a demonstration of both of these things, and was inspired by everyone’s favourite new card from Born of the Gods, Charging Badger. I’ve recently taken to them in my Commander decks when I’m building them, having got fed up with just having “good stuff” decks.

Welcome to the farm

I looked at the badger and thought tribal. A quick Gatherer search later and that plan was blown out of the water, with a grand total of four badgers, and none of them legendary (time to get on WotC’s back, methinks). However, I was able to take inspiration from another card from Born of the Gods and decided to make my general Karametra, God of Harvests.

I had decided to make a farming deck. Looking at the rest of the set gives us Reap What Is Sown too, which is a nice little on theme trick.

Thus, it was back to Gatherer I went. There were some obvious inclusions from the outset. Swords to Plowshares led to similar searches for “plow”s, “farm” brought me the devotion-enabling Farmstead (and as awful as this is, I have had cause to buy one of these before, it currently resides in my cube!) amongst other things and a search through equipment brought up a pitchfork and some scythes.

Sadly, the search for “tractor” proved less fruitful, the only one used to be a tractor but is now a demon (points for anyone who gets that joke without looking it up!), and apparently there are no deers in Magic, though there are antelopes and even elk, so I guess we can have a Burnished Hart in there.

So, lets go on a tour of the farm: I’ve got my farmer (well, the farmer is god of the farm), farm and some tools (and vermin), I should actually get some livestock: an Akroan Horse; Ironhoof Ox and the gang give us some cows; pigs are covered by Krosan Tusker,Copperhoof Vorrac and the new Archetype of Endurance and we even have a sheep in the form of a Rustspore Ram. And, of course, every farmer needs a Zodiac Rooster to wake him up in the morning.

Having masterfully manipulated my menagerie I turned from fauna to the flora of the farm. It should produce many Bountiful Harvests, the odd Early Harvest, and we mustn’t forget to gather in the Acorn Harvest at the Edge of Autumn.

Hmmm… we’ll need a Nut Collector to gather that in. I guess we’ll have to live with the occasional Weird Harvest, but in a world filled with magical beings a little weirdness is to be expected.

With all of this going on, we’ll need some help. Gatstaf Shepherd can help look after the Rustspore Ram, well, for most of the month. The Nullmage Shepherd can help him out though, and if it goes missing we can always send our Shepherd of the Lost after it.

We’ve also got in a little Far Eastern help from the Shu Farmer and Shu Soldier-Farmers, doubly useful if the farm comes under attack. The help is rounded out by some elves, a herder and a farmer, and a Clougoat Ranger, to look after our goats.

bountiful harvest

Hmmm… I guess we’d better get some goats then too, and probably a Springjack Pasture for them to frolic in. We can probably get some at the Trading Post too if needs be, there’s all manner of things available at that ole market.

Back to the farm, and I guess we’d better have a little tour of the fields. The Exotic Orchard lies next to the Greener Pastures with the Vivid Meadow and Drifting Meadow providing plenty of wide open spaces for the animals to roam.

Beyond them is the Sungrass Prairie and the baking heat of the Grasslands. WAIT! Don’t go over there. It’s pretty wild in those parts, that part of the farm is constantly evolving and changing. Come over here and sit next to this Reflecting Pool with me, and we’ll go through some of the other aspects of the farm.

We’ll need something to look after the Cream of the Crop, so we’ll need some Scarecrows. Heap Doll and Scuttlemutt provide some utility with One-Eyed Scarecrow providing some defence against flyers.

A Lurebound Scarecrow provides some nice early fat while Thornwatch Scarecrow and Antler Skulkin are there for backup.

But wait! There’s more vermin getting in! There’s a Silverchase Fox that’s slipped in and WOAH! Look at the size of that Vulpine Goliath! Looks like we’ll need to get in a Traproot Kami to help deal with those. A Trophy Hunter would probably appreciate the Goliath on his wall too.

And so, without further ado, we come to the deck list:
