8 Of The Best Magic: The Gathering Cosplay Customes That Will Simply Blow Your Mind
I suppose I should start off by explaining that this article isn’t about Magic: The Gathering cards, or how to be better at playing them– Wait! Hear me out! It won’t help you become a better Magic player, but it will hopefully be entertaining and eye opening!
The Magic community has been, in my personal experience, one of the most supportive and friendly environments to be a part of. It is a major reason the game continues to grow year on year. There are many aspects of the game which catch hold for different people, with some affecting more than others. It is a card game, a brilliant card game, with a beautiful universe created around it which is brought to life by artists, writers and designers. Fans that enjoy what has been created for them give back to the community in ways that they can. This ranges from fan art, card alters, stories and – in more recent years – Cosplayers.
Cosplay, short for costume play, is a hobby in which you dress up as a fictional character. It encompasses many forms of media, such as anime, video games and comics. Enthusiasts usually construct their costumes from scratch and aim for a high degree of accuracy. It can be hard work, though at the end of the day it is all about having fun and dressing up as a character you love.
In recent years the growth of both Magic: The Gathering and Cosplaying as hobbies is allowing them to overlap with more and more frequency. We have seen Planeswalkers come to life in books, comics and, more recently, the animated trailers for upcoming sets. They have their own personalities, stories and beautiful detailed outfits. It was a Cosplay dream waiting to happen!
However back in 2010 my internet searches for “Planeswalker cosplay” and “mtg cosplay” were thin. It wasn’t until the 2011 Worlds event held in San Francisco that I caught sight of a Magic Cosplayer; CSPrankle as Elspeth, Knight-Errant, and that was the turning point.

In just a couple of years the amount of Magic: The Gathering Cosplay has risen by a huge amount. Not only are people Cosplaying the named Planeswalkers but also their favourite cards, such as Commander Generals and Ravnica Guild Champions. The support of the community, as well as Wizards themselves, has been wonderful and is a major reason we will continue to see this rise!
Cosplayers are also being seen more frequently at GPs, Pro Tours and even local stores for prereleases. This seems to be mainly in the U.S.A. but hopefully something similar will start happening in Europe and the U.K as well.
Featured in this article are just some of the best Cosplays from the Magic Multiverse that I have found. Please make sure to visit the Cosplayers’ various pages and sites to see more of their work!
