UB Mystical Teachings – A Pauper Video Article by Grant Hislop

Hello again.

Previously, we took a look at some of the Aggro decks that are likely to populate the early days of the Modern format. The first few results from tournaments are in, and they seem to corroborate my findings. We’re starting with a bunch of Aggro decks, with a smattering of combo decks. Control decks can’t really exist in this format without it becoming a bit more defined, so Control mages can tell which threats to fight.

Today, we’re going to have a look at some of the more mid-range decks that are available to the Modern mage. Not going to look at these in any particular order, so don’t think that I’m ‘tiering’ these decks, because I’m not.

BUG

4 [Card]Dark Confidant[/Card]
4 [Card]Tarmogoyf[/Card]
2 [Card]Vendillion Clique[/Card]
2 [Card]Kitchen Finks[/Card]
1 [Card]Trygon Predator[/Card]
1 [Card]Eternal Witness[/Card]

4 [Card]Cryptic Command[/Card]
4 [Card]Green Suns Zenith[/Card]
4 [Card]Thoughtseize[/Card]
4 [Card]Preordain[/Card]
2 [Card]Dismember[/Card]
2 [Card]Maelstrom Pulse[/Card]
2 [Card]Putrefy[/Card]

4 [Card]Creeping Tar Pit[/Card]
4 [Card]Verdant Catacombs[/Card]
4 [Card]Misty Rainforest[/Card]
2 [Card]Breeding Pool[/Card]
2 [Card]Overgrown Tomb[/Card]
2 [Card]Watery Grave[/Card]
2 [Card]Treetop Village[/Card]
1 [Card]Dryad Arbor[/Card]
1 [Card]Forest[/Card]
1 [Card]Island[/Card]
1 [Card]Swamp[/Card]

Sideboard

4 [Card]Flashfreeze[/Card]
2 [Card]Dismember[/Card]
2 [Card]Vendillion Clique[/Card]
3 [Card]Spellskite[/Card]
3 [Card]Damnation[/Card]
1 [Card]Putrefy[/Card]

This is a deck I can get behind. Efficient beaters, backed up by disruption and a light smattering of countermagic. It should be pretty obvious how this deck plays out.

I’d be inclined to cut the [Card]Eternal Witness[/Card] and [Card]Trygon Predator[/Card] from the Maindeck and find room for [Card]Noble Hierarch[/Card]. That guy is so good, and he turns your [Card]Vendillion Clique[/Card] into a hell of a clock, and lets you win all the [Card]Tarmogoyf[/Card] fights. Other than that, this deck looks really solid, and something along these lines is likely to be where my personal testing would start.

I love this colour combination due to its versatility. You have access to answers to literally everything in the game of magic, so it’s relatively easy to adapt this deck to the metagame.

Doran Junk

4 [Card]Treefolk Harbinger[/Card]
3 [Card]Noble Hierarch[/Card]
4 [Card]Spellskite[/Card]
4 [Card]Dark Confidant[/Card]
3 [Card]Doran, the Siege Tower[/Card]
2 [Card]Kitchen Finks[/Card]
1 [Card]Qasali Pridemage[/Card]
2 [Card]Tarmogoyf[/Card]
2 [Card]Knight of the Reliquary[/Card]

4 [Card]Green Suns Zenith[/Card]
3 [Card]Path to Exile[/Card]
1 [Card]Nameless Inversion[/Card]
4 [Card]Thoughtseize[/Card]
2 [Card]Maelstrom Pulse[/Card]

4 [Card]Verdant Catacombs[/Card]
1 [Card]Marsh Flats[/Card]
2 [Card]Misty Rainforest[/Card]
3 [Card]Murmuring Bosk[/Card]
2 [Card]Overgrown Tomb[/Card]
2 [Card]Godless Shrine[Card]
1 [Card]Temple Garden[/Card]
1 [Card]Dyad Arbor[/Card]
1 [Card]Breeding Pool[/Card]
1 [Card]Treetop Village[/Card]
1 [Card]Forest[/Card]
1 [Card]Plains[/Card]
1 [Card]Swamp[/Card]

Sideboard

1 [Card]Ghost Quarter[/Card]
1 [Card]Duress[/Card]
2 [Card]Relic of Progenitus[/Card]
2 [Card]Go for the Throat[/Card]
1 [Card]Gaddock Teeg[/Card]
2 [Card]Tidehollow Sculler[/Card]
2 [Card]Kitchen Finks[/Card]
4 [Card]Rain of Tears[/Card]

What’s really good with Doran? [Card]Spellskite[/Card]. [Card]Spellskite[/Card] that attacks for 4, and still costs 2 mana. Nice.

This deck, again, does it all. It’s a really fast clock, coupled with disruption to put the opponent on the back foot from as early as turn 2. There are fewer things that are scarier than a turn 2 [Card]Doran, the Siege Tower[/Card].

This deck is the definition of mid-range aggro.

Bant

4 [Card]Noble Hierarch[/Card]
1 [Card]Birds of Paradise[/Card]
1 [Card]Qasali Pridemage[/Card]
2 [Card]Tarmogoyf[/Card]
4 [Card]Spellstutter Sprite[/Card]
1 [Card]Trygon Predator[/Card]
3 [Card]Knight of the Reliquary[/Card]
3 [Card]Vendilion Clique[/Card]
1 [Card]Rafiq of the Many[/Card]

3 [Card]Green Suns Zenith[/Card]
3 [Card]Sword of Feast and Famine[/Card]
4 [Card]Path to Exile[/Card]
4 [Card]Cryptic Command[/Card]
4 [Card]Preordain[/Card]

4 [Card]Misty Rainforest[/Card]
2 [Card]Verdant Catacombs[/Card]
3 [Card]Breeding Pool[/Card]
2 [Card]Hallowed Fountain[/Card]
1 [Card]Temple Garden[/Card]
2 [Card]Sunpetal Grove[/Card]
3 [Card]Glacial Fortress[/Card]
1 [Card]Island[/Card]
1 [Card]Plains[/Card]
1 [Card]Dryad Arbor[/Card]
1 [Card]Forest[/Card]
1 [Card]Ghost Quarter[/Card]

Sideboard

3 [Card]Gaddock Teeg[/Card]
4 [Card]Spell Pierce[/Card]
3 [Card]Ethersworn Canonist[/Card]
1 [Card]Bojuka Bog[/Card]
4 [Card]Kitchen Finks[/Card]

So, we forego the usual Mythic combo of [Card]Sovereigns of Lost Alara[/Card] + [Card]Eldrazi Conscription[/Card] or [Card]Rafiq of the Many[/Card] + [Card]Finest Hour[/Card], and just focus on efficient creatures, backed up by some disruption. Are you sensing a theme here? Also, the sheer volume of [Card]Green Suns Zenith[/Card]s you’re looking at across these decks should probably be a hint to you to start acquiring these ASAP, especially if you’ve got any interest in playing Mid-Range in Modern.

There’s not really anything to say about this deck that I haven’t said above. It’s in a popular colour combination, and it hits very hard. Something like this is sure to be popular.

There’s probably a reasonable Jund deck to be made, but I haven’t found one that I like the look of yet. Ditto for Black/White tokens.

Part 3 of 4 should follow in the next few days, in which I’ll take a look at a few of the combo decks that have been popping up, and part 4 will look at the very few Control decks that exist in the format.
